This scooped gold frame profile features a decorative embossed pattern that is stamped on a gesso base, then finished with multiple variations of gold color that have the look of aged gilt cream. All of this sits on a wood substrate that is 1-3/4” wide and 1” deep along the outer edge. The rabbet depth is 1/2”.
This picture frame profile has a feeling of inviting warmth and noble class; perhaps even a hint of whimsical, medieval charm. Examples of this charm may include associations with chivalrous knights, court jesters, magicians, psychics, and sorcerers, so artwork that is playful, old-world, and theatrical might be best suited for this frame.
With that said, this moulding is also versatile in a visual sense. You could frame bold colors such as blue, purple, and red, or maintain a soft, monochromatic feel with creamy and gold tones. Contemporary Hawaiian paintings and fine art prints on paper also pair well with this frame, such as lithographs, serigraphs, monotype prints, and woodblock prints.
Technically, this frame is best suited for matted works on paper due to the limited depth of 1/2”. If you’re framing a canvas, you might consider a wider profile within this family of frames, such as V640.
