This is a dark brown scooped wood picture frame with a tight grain. It has a modern contemporary look with a semi-matte finish. It scoops toward the center with lighter color detail lines on both the inner and outer edges. It is 1-1/2” wide, 1-3/16”outside height, with a 1/2” rabbet depth. It is made from soft, durable wood.
This frame is suitable for use on art from mid-century modern (1950s and later), up to the latest designs. It has a polished casual look which adds warmth without losing clean graphic lines. It is suitable for a broad type of art, and tends to work extremely well for larger grouped hangings, whether in a public, private, or commercial spaces.
This moulding works well for paintings and drawings with strong lineal components. There are many printmakers and letterpress artists who are choosing this frame. It is excellent for color photographs of both urban and natural scenes. Since it is wood, it works very well on natural scenes, which metal often doesn’t. Paired with a crisp white mat, it makes any image pop. This makes it popular with vendors and artists who exhibit at art markets, as it makes a warm, uniform, neutral presentation. The dark cocoa color is also great on black & white woodcuts and etchings.
Another popular use for this frame is for retro posters of national parks and wine country tours. A mat is rarely needed in this application, but a mat showcases the event or location as something special.
The depth of the rabbet is slightly shallow, so if the art is thicker than 1/2’, such as a stretched canvas. Otherwise, this frame can accommodate most projects and media.
